Late-night study sessions, new roommates, new friends and new adventures. College is full of firsts, but one thing shouldn’t be left to chance: your safety. A few simple habits can help protect you, your roommates, and everything you’ve worked so hard to bring with you.
- Don’t overload outlets. Too many electronics plugged into one outlet can overheat and start a fire.
- Use only approved power strips. Choose surge protectors with built-in circuit breakers and never plug one power strip into another.
- Keep chargers uncovered. Phones, laptops and battery packs need room to breathe while charging. Never charge them under pillows, blankets or mattresses.
- Leave candles at home. Flameless LED candles create the same cozy vibe without the fire risk.
- Replace damaged cords immediately. If it’s frayed, cracked or exposed, unplug it and replace it.
- Know your exit. Locate the nearest emergency exits and fire alarms on move-in day, not during an emergency.
College is about making smart decisions. Let dorm safety be one of them because the best college memories aren’t the ones that start with an emergency.
